Hospitality and Tourism

Hospitality and Tourism Level 2

The National Vocational Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism Level 2 is a 10‑month programme delivered at Desert Academy Maltahöhe. It is accredited by the Namibia Training Authority and covers all the unit standards required for competence in hospitality services, tourism operations, customer care, food preparation basics, housekeeping, front office procedures, workplace numeracy, English, and workplace safety. Trainees are expected to master both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in order to successfully complete the NTA assessments.

At Desert Academy we extend the curriculum with a strong emphasis on employability and sustainable eco‑tourism. Trainees are guided to understand the principles of environmentally responsible tourism, service excellence, and community‑based hospitality. The programme prepares them to meet industry expectations and to contribute to Namibia’s growing eco‑tourism sector, where opportunities are closely linked to conservation and rural development. Life skills are integrated into the programme as compulsory modules. These cover personal relationships, health and wellness, reproductive choices, prevention of gender‑based violence, awareness of HIV and substance abuse, financial management, mental health and building respectful communities. The aim is to equip trainees with practical knowledge and values that will guide them in everyday decisions and prepare them for responsible participation in society.

Experience The Living Classroom

The unique feature of our programme is the living classroom approach. Trainees spend extensive time in our RuralRevive business environment where they apply their learning in real enterprises. This includes guesthouses, catering services, tourism projects and community hospitality initiatives. Through these placements trainees build a portfolio of evidence, gain confidence and experience the realities of Namibia’s rural economy. Mentorship and structured job attachments ensure that learning is practical, hands‑on and directly connected to community transformation.

Level 3: Specialisations in Hospitality

Progression to Level 3, the National Vocational Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism, is possible but highly selective. Only trainees who demonstrate determination, consistent performance and strong values will be invited to continue. At Level 3, trainees must choose one of two specialisations:

  • Commercial Cookery – apprenticeship‑based training combining industry placements in kitchens and catering services with structured learning, designed to prepare committed trainees for leadership roles in culinary operations.
  • Food and Beverage Operations – apprenticeship‑based training combining placements in restaurants, hotels and beverage service enterprises with structured learning, designed to prepare trainees for supervisory and management roles in Namibia’s hospitality sector.

Both pathways are apprenticeship‑driven, combining industry placements with structured learning, and are designed to prepare the most committed trainees for leadership roles in Namibia’s tourism and hospitality industries.
